Of course, the specifics of what you need in a camera will vary depending upon the way in which you envision yourself using your camera. On the other hand, you might consider higher-end options if you plan to start dabbling in photography as a hobby. First off, make sure you familiarize yourself with the different types of zoom, and also know what you will need your zoom to do. Nikon CoolPix S8100

The Nikon CoolPix S8100 is an outstanding compact mega zoom
camera. The S8100 was Nikon’s upgrade to their S8000. Don’t let the drop from
14 megapixels to 12.1 fool you, the camera is definiately a step up. The 10x
optical zoom remains the same between the two cameras. With a lens equivalent
to a 30-300 mm lens.

The S8100 has been updated to include a BSI (backside illuminated)
CMOS sensor over the S8000s traditional CMOS. The BSI CMOS sensor will allow
more light into the diode therefore the camera should be able to take pictures
in lower light levels. Making the S8100 a great camera for indoor photos. The
camera responsiveness and shutter speed are also remarkably fast.

Sized at 4.1 x 2.4 x 1.2 inches, the S8100 is just the right size
for a compact camera. Allowing it to be small enough to fit in your shirt
pocket, yet large enough to fit your hands comfortably. The back of the camera
has a clear and amazingly sharp 3 inch LCD display. The controls were
incredibly easy to use and simple to figure out. The camera has a small
telescoping lens that does exhibit a small amount of distortion at the farthest
zoom but this is not uncommon with telescoping lenses.

 

The S8100 employees two different strategies to help with
stabilization. It uses both digital and optical stabilization. The camera also
shows off an impressive set of macro settings. It was amazing to see how close
you could get and the fine level of detail picked up by the camera. You also
have a full range of ISO settings available. There is an auto setting, and then
you have options of manual setups from 160 to 3200. Reported to be the best
around 200 on the ISO range.

 

This camera takes both JPEG still pictures and .MOV videos. The
pictures are recorded at 4000 x 3000 pixels, while video is recorded at 1080p
at 30 frames a second. The videos are ok on this camera but a dedicated video
camera would be better.

 

The Nikon CoolPix is a great buy ranging between $250 and $300.
For the price this camera makes an great buy. Customers and professionals are
both giving the CoolPix S8100 high ratings for it’s class.

The Samsung NX10 is a 14.6 megapixel camera that is in the four-thirds category. These cameras are smaller then your standard DSLR but take considerably better pictures then a compact camera. The NX10 is a very nice camera at a $500 price point. This camera is worth the price when priced at $500.

This camera comes with a 18-55 mm lens (which is a 27-84 mm 35 mm equivalent).  This camera does have the ability to have interchangeable lenses. This lens will work great for most beginners and for your average user. There are a number of other lenses samsung either has released or is going to release for this camera.  There are two pancake lenses, a tele zoom, and a super tele zoom. The image stabilization for this camera is found in the lens.  This is a very different system when compared to other cameras.

The NX10 has a large CMOS sensor so it is able to take very nice, bright, and colorful pictures. The NX10 offers a great Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) screen to look at while taking your picture. The LCD is three inches of clear and bright viewing pleasure.  The LCD has a very high refresh rate to help with this. This also helps for this LCD to work a little better in the sunlight.

This camera has the ability of taking high definition HD videos at 1920 x 1080p at 30 frames per second. Unike many other cameras out now, the NX10 does not have a dedicated video button.  This may or may not be a sticking point for you. You will have to specifically switch settings to be able to take video. You are also able to record in stereo. If you are looking to do a lot of recording, you should consider purchasing a camcorder as the video is comperable to other still frame cameras.

A nice feature this camera does offer is the dust reduction system. This is a supersonic vibration that vibrates at 60,000 times per second. Hopefully dust will no longer be an issue with taking pictures on this camera.

When compared to other cameras in the four-thirds category the price is comparable and the pictures are clear and clean. Good reports are being given by users and professionals alike when it comes to this camera. This camera will be enjoyed by both beginners and advanced users alike.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 is an exciting micro four-thirds camera. This camera is the big brother to the DMC-G1 camera. The goal of this camera was to reduce the size of a DSLR but not give up any quality of the picture. One great feature the G2 has is its touch screen. The G2 is the first in in its class to add this feature.

The LCD is three inches of high resolution viewing. As stated before this also has a touch screen that allows you to select where to auto focus. You can purchase other lenses for this camera but they need to be lenses that are compatible with the four-thirds camera. To further help your picture taking the G2 also offers an optical image stabilizer to help reduce handshake distortions. This makes this camera more ideal for low light pictures.

You can also capture 1280 x 720 HD video using your G2. You don’t have to mess with a lot of setting to get a video running either. There is a dedicated button that starts to film immediately. Another great feature is the software they have added to try to cut down on wind noise. You have four different wind cutting setting to assist with reducing this type of noise. You can further improve the audio by hooking up an external microphone to the camera during filming.
